Three ways to love yourself this valentine's day

Single or not, Valentine's Day makes a great opportunity to give yourself some extra lovin'. I feel that many people put so much time and energy into their partner, family, or career, that we may have nothing left for a little self-love. Here are three ways you can love yourself this Valentine's Day.

1. Self-care. Whether it's taking a bath, getting a massage, or binge-watching Netflix, do what makes you feel good. Self-care is not selfish, in fact, it is the opposite. You can't pour from an empty cup, meaning you must take care of yourself first before you can take care of others. It doesn't have to be expensive or even timely, but do something just for you. What do you like doing? What can you do to make yourself feel content or happy? For me, I love taking baths, reading, and binge-watching reality TV. Whatever you decide to do, do it with intention. Tell yourself you're doing it because you love yourself...because you deserve to feel good.

2. Be Kind. Kindness may seem like a no brainer, but I feel so many of us struggle with this more than we let on. We are our worst critics. We may judge ourselves for our looks, food choices, and sometimes wonder if we are [insert desired trait here] enough. We are often kinder to others than we are to ourselves. Follow the golden rule and treat others as you would want to be treated - yourself included. Give yourself compassion; you've been through a lot, but that has made you who you are today...and you're pretty incredible. Love who you are and don't say anything about your body that you would not say about someone else's. Know that you are exactly where you are supposed to be and keep pushing for the life you want. Also, be kind to others. The more we judge others, the more we're apt to place those same judgments on ourselves. We're all in this life together and we are all doing the best we can. Everyone has a story.

3. Reflect. Take a moment today to think about you. What makes you so awesome, strong, and unique? What do you do or bring to this world that makes it a better place? Think about your body and all that it does for you without a second thought. You're breathing, reading this, and hearing noise in the background. Be thankful for your lungs, your eyes, your ears, the blood that flows in your body to keep your organs functioning, etc. You are a miracle. Reflect on the challenges you have overcome. You are so strong and can do anything you put your mind to. Think about the millions of miracles that surround you each day. Your family, your job, and your health maybe some of the first to come to mind. But what about electricity, technology, freedom, and access to health care? Many of us, take these for granted, yet they are incredible miracles that affect our lives without a second thought. Remember, no matter how tough life may seem, there is always something to be grateful for.
